Donald Matheson Lectured on News and Privacy

On November 15, 2016, Professor Donald Matheson of the University of Canterbury in New Zealand came to the School of Journalism and Communication in our university and gave a lecture entitled "Why privacy needs to be rethought for journalism in social media?”.

Professor Matheson believes that the dichotomy of public space - private space is not a good way to solve the problem. When it comes to social media privacy, we should also start with the relationship between people, and the relationship between people and society, we should not take it for granted that “open” information must be usable. Professor Matheson believes that the core of the problem is that the current concept of "privacy" is largely an individual-level framework. The real privacy issue comes from structural power asymmetry. (School of Journalism and Communication)
