On November 4, 2016, Professor Phil Benson from the Department of Linguistics of Macquarie University in Australia came to our School of Foreign Language and Literature for a lecture entitled "Ways of Seeing: The individual and the social in applied linguistics research".
In the lecture, Professor Benson introduced three historical stages of applied linguistics research: the era of "the invisible learner", the era of learner-centredness, and the era of person-centredness. The specific characteristics of the three stages are described in detail. The first stage is the era of "the invisible learner" mainly before the 1970s. The second stage is the era of learner-centredness between the 1970s to 1990s. The third stage is the era of person-centredness, which began at the beginning of the 20th century and continues to this day. (School of Foreign Languages and Literatures Li Xueying, Li Li)
