Professor Mark Balnaves Lectures on Social Media

    From September 24 to 28, entrusted by the Confucius China Study Progrm of the Confucius Institute, Professor Mark Balnaves from the University of Newcastle, Australia visited our School of Journalism and Communication, and presented three academic lectures, comparing and analyzing some frontier issues on social media from the perspectives of economy, society and culture,etc. 


    Professor Balnaves said that living in an imagined community with boundaries and sovereignty, a single nation-state is transforming to a marketconcept with economy as its carrier.
    In a lecture entitled One Event, Two Stories: the Role of Wechat and New Media in the Era of Intercultural Communication, Professor Balnaves commented on identity crisis in social media. By showcasing the usage of Chinese social media platforms, he tracked user habits of Wechat and presented the development trend of the version from home and abroad.
