On June 8, our French Associate Professor Benoit Mayer, who recently joined the Institute of International Law, was invited to take part in the “Security and Environment” International Symposium organized by EHESS, and delivered a report entitled The implications of the securitization of climate change in the session of “climate security”.
Professor Benoit Mayer said that climate change has been the focus of many international security organizations. The adverse impact of climate change could exacerbate social tensions and violence. For example, drought is the cause of the conflict in Darfur. Countries should establish a long-term cooperation mechanism in order to address the impact brought by climate change on the international security situation. The papers collected by this symposium will be published by Bruylant in 2016. (Institute of International Law)
