Dean Yu Ting's Speech: Give People Fish and Teach Them How to Fish

Ladies and gentlemen, distinguished guests, and fellow students, good morning:

On the occasion of Professor Li Jianzhong's major project opening report meeting, I would like to extend a warm welcome to all the guests on behalf of the College of Chinese Languageand Literature at Wuhan University, and also pay sincere respect to Professor Li Jianzhong's team.

This year marks the 130th anniversary of the celebration of Wuhan University. The College of Chinese Languageand Literature can be traced back to the Ziqiang Institute, which accompanied the establishment of National Wuhan University. The College has a long and glorious history. During the period of Republic of China, talents gathered here, and after 1950, the Chinese Department once again enjoyed a prominent reputation. However, it is gratifying to note that the College of Chinese Languageand Literature is not content with memories of yesterday's glory, but can always keep up with the times and make new progress. Our College currently has 9 secondary disciplines and 2 national first-class undergraduate majors, and our College has been selected as the top 2.0 training base for Chinese language and literature and the undergraduate program of the Strong Foundation Program; we have approximately 90 teachers in our college, including the "National College Huang Danian Style Teacher Team" of Ministry of Education and several high-level talents at the national level. Professor Li Jianzhong is one of the famous teachers selected by the "Ten Thousand Talented Teacher Plan".

Literature and art is a traditional strength among many disciplines in our College, with its own advantages and characteristics. In recent years, under the leadership of Professor Li Jianzhong, the discipline of literature and art has established itself in ancient Chinese literary theory and criticism, as well as Western literary theory and aesthetics, with distinctive features. Especially the team building led by Professor Li Jianzhong has been effective in our College, which not only reflects the distinct characteristics of individual research in humanities, but also aligns with the team effect of "organized research". In the current national strategy for science, education, and culture, an important and core topic is to write papers on the land of China and build a philosophy and social science with Chinese characteristics and Chinese style. From the continuity of research on two major projects, "Key words in the classics" to "Key words in literary theory", we can see that Li Jianzhong's project team has been committed to the organic combination of Chinese traditional literary criticism discourse with contemporary Chinese cultural construction and academic construction. Our college not only appreciate but also fully support this endeavor.

In addition, Professor Li Jianzhong's contribution also lies in bringing the project results to the general education of Wuhan University, and bringing academic research into teaching and cultivating morality. He led the construction of the General Education Center, the two major guidance courses of "Introduction to Humanities and Social Sciences Classics" and "Introduction to Natural Science Classics", which well incorporated the research awareness of iconic "classics" and "keywords", in his teaching, he not only “give students fish, but also teach them how to fish”, providing students with methodological inspiration for learning and academic reading. A major topic nowadays is not only about imparting sophisticated academic knowledge to students, but also about cultivating talents. Professor Li Jianzhong has made beneficial explorations and long-term efforts in this area.

Language originated from the urgent need for communication and immediately became a place for human habitation, it is a starting point for describing the world, defining the world, and constructing meaning, as well as evidence and reasoning for the world and all things. In language, keywords not only express the semantic content of language, but also the cultural connotation, and become the starting point for various ethnic groups to perceive the world. After thousands of years, almost every keyword has its own history of exegesis and interpretation, with extremely rich semantic connotations and cultural connotations. So, we need to return to the original classics, trace back to the beginning, understand and sort out the connotations and dimensional connections of words contained in contextual exegesis and ideological interpretation, and see new spiritual and constructive meanings in the circle of exegesis interpretation. This is not only a topic that scholars like me who study literature and exegesis should consider, but also a topic that literary researchers and even literary historians should consider.

In this wonderful season of mid spring, it’s a great delight to have friends coming from afar, we enjoy the joy of teaching, learning, and meeting friends through literature. The poem "Da Ya" says: "we’ve well drunk your moonshine, you’ve feasted your virtue fine, may you live forever nigh, enjoy happiness from God to high. ” I wish all guests a happy and joyful stay in Luojia Mountain! And I Wish this conference a complete success! Thank you all!
