On March 12, Professor Petroc Sumner, Dean of the School of Psychology at Cardiff University in the UK, visited the School of Philosophy and gave a lecture entitled “what does psychotic patients, climate change and eye movements have in common”.
He starts with the argument that "the human brain is a machine for decision making", pointing out that the human brain has an inherent advantage in decision-making. From the perspective of cognitive nerves, there are corresponding regions in the human brain in charge of seven aspects related to decision-making, namely social background, personality, emotion, reward, control, habit and conditioned reflex. His research adopts survey method, self-reporting scale, eye movement technology and Go-no go paradigm so as to explore in a comprehensive manner the decision-making mechanism of the human brain.
The second part of the lecture is the experimental part. The participating students tried VR glasses under the guidance of Professor Sumner. In the third part of the lecture, Prof. Sumner introduces the undergraduate and postgraduate study programs of Cardiff University to the teachers and students of the School. Some students also ask about fees, curriculum, language requirements and so on.
