Ma Feicheng: Preserve China's Digital Memory

MMa Feicheng, Senior Professor of Humanities and Social Sciences of Wuhan University and Director of the Center for the Study of Information Resources, published his article Preserve China's Digital Memory in the theory section of the People's Daily.

Professor Ma Feicheng points out in his article that digital information resources play a very important role in knowledge accumulation, cultural memory, and economic and social development. He illustrates the current development and preservation of digital information resources, and puts forward conservation programs and suggestions concerning digital information resources by combining with China's actual situation. Through the background and problem analysis of the current digital information resources preservation, Professor Ma proposes a strategic design of our digital information resource preservation: in terms of the system, we need to strengthen top-level design, establish and improve the long-term national preservation of digital information resources system, clarify digital information resource conservation standards, improve relevant laws and regulations; in terms of technology, firstly, we should conduct live migration technology on the basis of multiple backups; secondly, simulation and encapsulation technology; thirdly, overall systemic preservation technology; fourthly, data recovery and data archaeological technology. In the end, the article stresses that we should strengthen digital processing and long-term preservation of information with traditional media as the carrier, construct a long-term storage system of digital information resource with Chinese characteristics.
