【Seminar】 Multi-disciplinary Convergence & Big Data Empowerment - Peking University-Wuhan University Humanities and Social Sciences Digital Intelligence Seminar Held at Wuhan University

On March 16th, the Peking University-Wuhan University Humanities and Social Sciences Digital Intelligence Seminar was held at Wuhan University. More than 30 people, including representatives from the Humanities and Social Sciences Digital Intelligence Research Base at Peking University, experts from the National Engineering Laboratory of Big Data Analysis and Application Technology, Professor Shen Zhuanghai, Deputy Secretary of the Party Committee of Wuhan University, Mr. Ma Feicheng, Senior Professor of Humanities and Social Sciences, and experts and research institute members from relevant schools of humanities and social sciences, gathered together to share the latest research results in the field of humanities and social sciences digital intelligence and explore the development direction of digital humanities.

Shen Zhuanghai pointed out that the convergence of multiple disciplines and the empowerment of big data have become a new direction for the development of humanities and social sciences. As a leading university in China, Peking University has established a digital and intelligent research base for humanities and social sciences. The base has conducted organized research with strategic, forward-looking, and systematic approaches, and created an important platform for interdisciplinary exchanges and collision of new ideas in humanities and social sciences. Wuhan University has made plans for the deployment in the field of digital humanities, integrated its advantageous resources in the fields of digital humanities and big data research, and established a Philosophy and Social Sciences Laboratory, which was approved by the Ministry of Education, and actively built an important demonstration platform to explore the development of new humanities. It is hoped that the two universities can take this seminar as an opportunity to further strengthen exchanges in the field of humanities and social sciences, and open a new chapter in high-level cooperation between the two universities in the field of humanities and social sciences.

Also attending the meeting were Wang Zhouyi and Guo Lin, Vice Dean of the Department of Social Sciences at Peking University, Professor Fang Qing, Dean of the Institute of Humanities and Social Sciences at Wuhan University, and representatives from the Institute of Humanities and Social Sciences at both universities. The meeting was chaired by Professor Fang Debin, Vice Dean of the Institute of Humanities and Social Sciences at Wuhan University and Director of the Research Platform Department.

In the keynote section, Professor Qiu Zeqi from the Department of Sociology at Peking University gave a speech titled “Digital Technology and the Revolution of Liberal Arts Paradigm”, where he used the Kuhn model to introduce the characteristics and iterations of paradigms, and explained the differences and connections between humanities and social sciences. He proposed that what is needed today is big teams, big data, and multiple disciplines. The sanctity and mystery of the entire society will eventually pass away, and the era of individual self has arrived.

Ma Feicheng gave a detailed introduction to the architecture and operation of Wuhan University's Big Data Research Institute in a speech titled "A New Paradigm for Digital Intelligence Driven Humanities and Social Sciences Research - Practice of Big Data Research Institute". He pointed out that as an interdisciplinary and comprehensive academic research institution for humanities and social sciences big data services in Wuhan University, the Big Data Research Institute will further focus on "digital intelligencex, digital intelligence+, +digital intelligence", carry out research and development of digital intelligence products, resource sharing, and consulting services, and provide new potential, new momentum, and new efficiency for humanities and social sciences research.

Professor Zhu Qingsheng from the Department of History at Peking University shared a report titled "Peking University Liberal Arts Image Laboratory". He stated that the Liberal Arts Image Laboratory at Peking University is a base for studying ancient Chinese art, contemporary Chinese art, and world art. The center spans multiple disciplines, andgathers domestic and foreign expert resources. It aims to conduct interdisciplinary research, strengthen exchanges and cooperation with the government and enterprises, and it has produced multiple research results related to Han Dynasty art, contemporary art, and other related fields.

Professor Yu Ting from the College of Chinese Language and Literature, Wuhan University, gave a speech titled title of "Construction of Ancient Chinese Primary School Resource Libraries and Data Platforms". In this speech, he expressed his commitment to preserving and digitally reproducing ancient Chinese primary school classics, which can improve the accuracy and breadth of language and writing research in the current Chinese cultural circle and is of great significance for cultural and historical research.

Professor Wang Tengjiao from the School of Computer Science at Peking University, delivered a speech titled "Global Data Collection and Data Warehouse Construction of the Humanities and Social Sciences Digital Intelligence Research Base", he took the data warehouse of the Humanities and Social Sciences Digital Intelligence Base as an example and shared the successful experience of data warehouses supporting interdisciplinary research and serving national strategic needs to carry out multiple applications.

Professor Wang Xiaoguang from the School of Information Management of Wuhan University, gave a speech titled "The Concept and Practice of Intelligent Computing for Cultural Heritage", he focused on the construction of an intelligent computing laboratory for cultural heritage. He proposed that intelligent computing for cultural heritage should adhere to the concept of digital humanities research, which can achieve digital reconstruction and activation of cultural heritage. Ithelps to promote the transformation and integration of cultural heritage between the real world and the digital world, and support humanities research, cultural inheritance and industrial development, and the prosperity of human digital civilization.

Wu Guowu, Associate Professor of the Chinese Department at Peking University, gave a speech titled "Exploration and Research on the Digitization of Ancient Books". Taking the Digital Laboratory of Ancient Books at Peking University as an example, he proposed that the digitization of ancient books and digital humanities are "harmonious but different". The digitization of ancient books is an internal driving force for the development of independent knowledge system of Chinese style digital humanities, and digital humanities provide methodological inspiration and practical reference for the digitization of ancient books. In the new era, the digitization of ancient books should promote the integration and development of the two. The academic community and industry should attach importance to its research and exploration.


Professor Peng Zhiyong from the School of Computer Science at Wuhan University gave a speech on the "Construction of Wuhan University Humanities and Social Sciences Big Data Sharing Platform", where he focused on introducing the new generation of domestic database system (Totem) used for cultural heritage intelligent computing. And he shared the application results of the data sharing platform in the digitization of Chinese bamboo and silk literature, totem genealogy, and other aspects.

Yuan Xiaoru, a researcher at the School of Intelligence at Peking University, shared a comparative study on the collaborative research between Wuhan University and Peking University on visualization and humanities and social sciences through a speech titled "Exploration of interdisciplinary visual design". He believed that going forward, there will be more challenging data and visualization tasks, as well as new visualization and visual analysis scenarios. So we need to develop more convenient and user-friendly visualization to achieve the creativity and beauty of visualization.

 

Professor Huang Minxue from the School of Economics and Management of Wuhan University focused on "digital intelligence scenario business computing" and introduced the digital intelligence business research team, and the architecture of digital intelligence scenario laboratory. He also elaborated on the theoretical research and practical situation of digital intelligence scenario computing and different digital intelligence scenarios.

The attending experts also discussed and exchanged ideas on digital humanities and laboratory construction, data elements and governance, genealogy visualization, and digitization of ancient books.

Wang Zhouyi and Guo Lin believed that the academic research on the digitization of humanities and social sciences by the two universities has explored beneficial experiences for the development of new humanities. The development of humanities and social sciences requires more interdisciplinary and data empowerment. We hope that the two universities can strengthen cooperation and create interdisciplinary academic exchange brands.

Fang Qing pointed out that this academic seminar has conducted in-depth exchanges in multiple disciplinary fields, including theoretical research, application scenarios, research paradigms, and implementation technologies, providing a new perspective and path for the development of digital intelligence in humanities and social sciences. He hoped that the collision of ideas in the seminar can promote further communication and cooperation between the two universities, and contribute to the construction of an independent knowledge system with Chinese characteristics, and contribute more wisdom and strength to the sustained prosperity and development of philosophy and social sciences with Chinese characteristics.

After the meeting, experts from the Humanities and Social Sciences Digital Intelligence Research Base of Peking University and members of the Department of Social Sciences conducted on-site research at the Cultural Heritage Intelligent Computing Laboratory and Big Data Research Institute of Wuhan University.
