From December 3rd to 4th, the 8th China-US Judicial and Human Rights Seminar was held in Beijing. Nearly 40 experts, scholars, judges and lawyers from the judicial and human rights fields of China and the United States attended the conference. Qin Qianhong, a professor at the School of Law of our university, was invited to give a keynote speech on issues related to the reform of the national supervision system.
The conference was co-sponsored by the China Human Rights Development Foundation and the US National Committee on US-China Relations. Huang Mengfu, Chairman of China Foundation for Human Rights Development, Jiang Jianguo, Deputy Head of Publicity Department of CPC Central Committee, Stephen Orens, President of the US-China National Committee for US-China Relations, Hu Yunteng, Chief Justice of the Supreme People's Court, and Huang Jin, President of the China University of Political Science and Law, attended the event.
In his keynote speech, Qin Qianhong elaborated on four aspects: the scope of supervisory objects, the power boundary of the supervisory authority, the supply problem of supervisory rules, and who will supervise the supervisory authority. In the discussion session, the questions raised by the American participants were "why should we establish a state supervisory authority, the difference between detention and arrest, and how to protect the relevant rights of the detainees during the period of retention" etc. It is reported that the China-US Judicial and Human Rights Seminar is an important mechanism for human rights exchanges and dialogues between Chinese and American non-governmental organizations. Since its inception in 2009, it has played a positive role in promoting communication and exchanges, seeking common ground while reserving differences and enhancing consensus between the two countries in the field of human rights and justice.
