The Eighth International Conference on Intercultural Communication (ICIC) is held on November 21 in our university. Experts and scholars from 17 countries and regions explore the path of peaceful communication in a conflict world under the theme of Ethnic Group Exchange, National Image and Cross-cultural Communication.

This conference has 11 sub-topics: National Image in the Era of Globalization, Transnational Image Perception and Communication Strategy, National Image in Multi-culture, Cross-ethnic Communication and the Image of Ethic Groups, Public Life and Cross-cultural Image, Development of News and Intercultural Communication, China's Image in the Eyes of Others, Culture and National Image, Ethnic Group, Nation and Cross-cultural Conflict, Cross-cultural Perception of China’s Image, National Image and Cultural Identity in a Global Vision.

During the meeting, experts and scholars read out 57 latest research papers. These papers take all kinds of conflicts and disasters as the object of study, scholars actively explore the theoretical innovation and suggestions of intercultural communication, which showcases the sense of academic mission of scholars around the world. Hugues Hotier, French pioneer of organizational communication, points out that the disputes of national image in the era of globalization lie in the stereotype prejudices, they appear under the guise of truth and reason, and the society usually believe them blindly, which is quite dangerous. Clifford Christians, world-renowned professor of communication ethics, explores the philosophical issues in constructing national image, thus advocating Non-violence and Peace Journalism Ethics. Graham Murdock, world-class master of political economy of communication from Britain, believes that in the current world system, competition takes the upper hand compared with cooperation, and the concept of National Image becomes an expression and the debate field of requiring competition. Therefore, we should have a better understanding and respect the diversity of countries in this digital technology environment, only in this way, can the cosmopolitan citizenship and sense of responsibility on a global scale solve global problems effectively.

In this meeting, many papers deal with the active role of China playing in the intercultural communication process in the world. Jürgen Henze, expert of China issues from the University of Hamburg in Germany, proposes that under the context of globalization, the construction of China’s image needs to be innovated from the perspective of cultural otherness, for example, increase the use of Chinese traditional cultural resources in cross-cultural education. Well-known scholar Professor Li Shaonan from Hong Kong studies the attractiveness of Chinese traditional culture and values to Western countries and their citizens, he believes it is entirely possible for modern China to extract traditional cultural resources, thus enhancing China's attractiveness and soft power. Professor Shan Bo from of the School of Journalism and Communication of Wuhan University points out that conflicts and disputes are bound to be intensified in cross-cultural contacts if we measure China with the standard of Western Christian civilization, for the Chinese people, we can reflect our own cultures through the projection of Western culture. Famous scholar Professor Guo Zhenzhi believes that China should realize two-way reciprocity and steady cross-cultural communication by relying on its strong and lasting culture and arts.
