On June 22, “Legal Response to Climate Change International Symposium”, which was hosted by the Research Institute of Environmental Law, was held in our university. Experts and scholars from the United States, Germany, the Netherlands, France, Australia and South Africa discussed legal issues related to climate change with the faculties and students of our university.
Professor Thomas Pogge from Yale University delivered a keynote speech under the session entitled Climate Change From the Philosophical and Ethics Perspectives, he appealed that under the background of globalization, all the countries should take public interest into consideration and shoulder their due responsibilities in a neutral attitude. In the session of Climate Change in the European Courts, Mr. JaapSpier, general counsel of the Dutch Supreme Court and honorary professor of Maastricht University, talked about that tort law principles played a role in the prevention of climate change. This symposium also arranged other sessions and roundtable discussions entitled Overview of Climate Change Litigation, Legal Response to Climate Change in South Africa, the Issue of Climate Change from Perspective of Rights.
