Zong Fubang

Born in March1936 in Guangzhou City of Guangdong Province;

Graduated from the Department of Chinese Language and Literature of Wuhan University in 1959 and has stayed as a teacher until today.

Zong Fubang, a professor of Chinese language and doctoral supervisor. The former Director of WHU Institute of Ancient Books, Zong is now the Director of the WHU Research Center for Chinese Language and Literature Classics, a member of the Leading Group of the Ancient Books Editing, Publishing and Planning under the State Council, a member of the National University Ancient Books Research Committee under the Ministry of Education, a member of the Expert Committee of National Ancient Books Protection under the Ministry of Culture.

He has long engaged in the work related to phonology, exegetical studies and dictionary compilation. From 1975 to 1987,he served as an editorial member in the compilation of Grand Chinese Characters Dictionaryand the leader of WHU writing team for Grand Chinese Characters Dictionary that has won theNational Book Award and the 1st Prizein the National Humanities and Social Science Research Achievements in HEIs Award. From 1985 onward, he began to preside over the compilation of The Galaxy of Traditional Semantic Annotations, a key project of the 7th and 8th Five-Year Plan of the National University Ancient Books Research Committee. After 18 years of hard work, it was published by the Commercial Pressin August, 2003, which waswell received of by scholars at home and abroad, and hailed as the “magnificent masterpiece that benefits both the current and future generations”. The Galaxy of Traditional Semantic Annotations, Chinese Lexicon Dictionary(Ci Hai),Chinese Etymology Dictionary(Ci Yuan),Grand Chinese Characters Dictionary(Hanyu Da Zidian) and Great Chinese Phrases Dictionary(Hanyu Da Cidian) have been listed as the five representative dictionary books on Chinese.His book won the first Chinese Government Award for Printing, the 1st Prize in the Fifth Wu Yuzhang Award for Humanities and Social Sciences and the Fifth Hubei Social Science Outstanding AchievementsAward. At present, he is theExecutive Editor of Grand Chinese Dictionary: Language Dictionary, a national major cultural publishing project and the Chief Editor of PhonologicalDictionary, while presiding over the compilation of The Galaxy of Ancient Chinese Phonology, a key project of the 9th Five-Year Plan of the National University Ancient Books Research Committee.
