WHU unearthed an ancient city wall and a moat 5200 years ago in Xiangyang

After more than 7 months of archaeological excavations, a section of the ancient city wall and moat was excavated at the Fenghuangzui site in Xiangyang, Hubei. Based on the analysis of a large number of unearthed cultural relics such as pottery, stone tools, and a small amount of jade, the archaeologists determined that the site was 5200 to 3900 years ago and belongs to the period of Qujialing Culture, Shijiahe Culture to Meishan Culture.

The Fenghuangzui site in Xiangyang, Hubei is located in the upper reaches of the Han River and the southern edge of the Nanyang Basin. The site is located on an irregular platform. It is a nearly square Neolithic city site, surrounded by city walls and a moat. The city site covers an area ofabout 140,000 square meters. In August 2020, Wuhan University, together with Hubei Provincial Institute of Cultural Relics and Archaeology, Xiangyang Museum and other units, carried out archaeological work on the Fenghuangzui site. The excavation area this time is more than 450 square meters.
