The International Symposium on Enlightenment Philosophy from the Comparative Perspective was Held in WHU

From November 10 to 11, 2019, the International Symposium on "Enlightenment Philosophy from the Comparative Perspective" was held at the School of Philosophy of Wuhan University.

The meeting was divided into eight sessions.

In the first session, Professor Stephen Gaukroger of the University of Sydney, Australia, explained the significance of the scientific spirit in the Enlightenment to the modernization of Western civilization. Prof. Li Weiwu from Wuhan University revealed the intertwined phenomena and relationships between enlightenment and enlightenment reflection based on the interpretation of the core concepts of “science”, “democracy” and “evolution” in the new cultural movement.

In the second session, Professor Wu Genyou of Wuhan University analyzed the provisions of Xiao Shafu's enlightenment from the perspective of Marxist philosophy and pointed out the necessity of enlightenment in the contemporary transition from ideological history to philosophical epistemology.

In the third session, Professor Xia Ying of Tsinghua University explored the dual nature of the enlightenment's dynamic and paradoxical characteristics through a comparative analysis of Kant, Marx and Foucault's enlightenment thoughts. Professor Li Dianlai from Wuhan University pointed out Marx's inheritance of modern values in Enlightenment.

In the fourth session, Professor Zheng Zemian of the Chinese University of Hong Kong discussed the possible basis for the integration of the Enlightenment thoughts in Central Europe.

Professor Wu Genyou pointed out in the closing summary that we should further consider the path and reasons for the acceptance and integration of Enlightenment in China, and pay attention to the two traditional understandings and reflections on enlightenment from China's own tradition and Western modernity.
