Shi Quan

Born in January 1918 in Guichi City of Anhui Province;

Graduated from the History Department of Yenching University in 1944; then entered the Research Institute of Yenching University specializing in the History of Modern China;

Went to the Liberated Area in North China for the revolutionary work in September 1948;

Came to work in the History Department of Wuhan University in 1954, with his academic title gradually promoting from Lecturer to Associate Professor, Professor, Doctoral Supervisor and finally Senior Professor;

Pass away on May 4th, 2004.

Shi Quan, a famous historian and historical geographer, engaged in the study on historical geography, especially on the geography of ancient Jing-Chu region for much his lifetime, which allowed him to gradually establisha complete set of new interpretation system for the ancient Jing-Chu geography, with a highlight in his innovated methodology in this field. He published 4 academic monographs and won multiple national and provincial/ministerial awards. He served quite a few posts, including the member of the 2nd Discipline Appraisal Group of the Academic Degrees Committee of the State Council, the member of the Committee of Historical Geography Discipline of the Geographical Society of China,the President of the Hubei Association of Jing Chu Culture Research, the Vice President of the Hubei Association of Yan Huang Culture Research, the Vice President of the Hubei Archaeology Society, the member of the National Committee of the 7th CPPCC, the member of the Standing Committee of the 8th CPPCC, the Vice-chair of CPPCC Hubei Provincial Committee, the Central Committee member of China Association for Promoting Democracy and the Chairman of Hubei Provincial Committee of China Association for Promoting Democracy.
